Cross And The Kiss
At one time in history the cross of Christ was carefully marked on marriage certificates and other documents by persons unable to read and write. The same person would also kiss their cross affirming their intention. Thus the saying "to seal with a kiss."
Combining the cross and the kiss was a sincere promise of truth, which made any document thus inscribed an official legal record.
The kiss began to have its own mark ><, which was to represent two sets of lips touching. Over time the kiss >< has overtaken the cross and today it is signed with an X.
